Green Hydrogen

There are Not Cuckoos. Part I

Green hydrogen could be safer than conventional fuels, but we must understand its behavior from scratch & divulgate Best Practices, Standards, Codes & Lessons Learning.

Short brief of hydrogen, hard & FACTUAL data divulgation specially for users, to understand its behavior.

1. The common, simple & elemental form of the Hydrogen molecule is gas
2. Hydrogen is not toxic, non poisonous, colorless, tasteless, odorless & diatomic & his density is very small.
3. Hence, sensors are a requirement for hydrogen fueling stations, equipment, and facilities
4. It is 14 times lighter than air & around 57 times lighter than gasoline, hence it will disperse, rapidly decreasing the risk of ignition at ground level. (Around 20 m/s means 6 times the gas dispersion speed).
5. Hydrogen is unlikely to cause asphyxiation.
6. A leak of hydrogen does not contaminate the environmental & will not be a threat for our health.
7. it is much more dangerous to release hydrogen in a closed area (such as a building) than release it directly into the open air.
8. Due the above, it is undetectable for humans, then hydrogen systems are designed with ventilation and leak detection & there is not odorant light enough to be combined with hydrogen. Remote hydrogen sensing is required for a robust detection of any hydrogen leak.
9. Hydrogen burns very quickly but has lower radiant heat, hence the air around the flame is less hot than the case of gasoline. Means less risk of secondary flames.
10. Combustion can not occur in a container with only hydrogen, needs an oxidizer like oxygen, a spark for ignition & needs higher oxygen concentration than gasoline to be explosive.

Green Hydrogen

11. The high content energy of hydrogen also implies that the energy of a hydrogen gas explosion is about 2.5 times higher than that of common hydrocarbon fuels. Therefore, about on an equal mass basis, hydrogen gas explosions are more destructive.
12. Hydrogen fires subside much more rapidly than hydrocarbon fires
13. Hydrogen flammability limits 4 to 75% of concentration in the air & increase with the temperature. High temperature of auto ignition.
14. Hydrogen safety standards have come a long way, but must not stop

A head, I found this reference from Internet, pretend only & specifically to show the collision car test performed by EuroNcap in EEUU https://lnkd.in/dvr6u6MY

Conversely, there were an explosion in a Hydrogen Refuelling Station in Norway in June, 2019 accoding the following press.[2]
